Pennicott’s Residence on Town Acreage

Pennicott’s Residence is located in the heritage listed town of Oatlands, just off from the Midlands Highway and 50 minutes north of Hobart. The residence was built in 1935 for Alma Pennicott (a resident of Oatlands) ,and was funded from part of the proceeds she received after winning 12,000 Pound first prize in the Tattersall’s Lottery on 7th June 1934. At the time of winning, Mrs Pennicott was a dressmaker and declared “I hope never to make a dress again”. She further stated her intentions “to say in Oatlands and build a modern residence”.
Pennicott’s Residence has been admired over the decades for its imposing presence within the streetscape. Its design embraces an eclectic mix of architectural styles and movements in a masterfully sophisticated way. Later in the 1960’s the term “Art Deco” was coined as a broad definition of this style.
Also skilfully blended into the Pennicott’s Residence is influences of the Californian Bungalow style, particularly its deep central verandah which boasts thick pillared supports. As recognition of its historic value, this residence has been listed in the Southern Midlands Council planning scheme under “Buildings and Works of Historic Significance”.
